When I was in high school I took a class called civics and the teacher was Henry ewert and that year was the election of Nixon versus Humphrey and the teacher used that election as a teaching opportunity and one of the things he taught us was how the statisticians can go state by state and they can predict with almost absolute certainty how each state is going to vote except for a handful of what is now called swing States and so when the election is over I looked at the results and I saw that Nixon had not carried his home state of California and his running mate Agnew had not carried his home state of Maine so the people who knew them best did not vote for them so I thought no well who is voting for them well it's all people all over the country who did not know them except through their TV commercials and ever since then that's the way it is we have no idea who these candidates are it's all television creations
