I am considering opening an account. I am American citizen, retired, living in Thailand.

I have two simple questions, and one more complicated.

1. What is the minimum balance required to hold an account at Schwab Internaional?

2. Will I be able to purchase GBTC, Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, an ETF?

3. I have four accounts that I want to transfer or rollover into my new Schwab International account: DWS IRA 120,00 DWS taxable 50,000 Putnam IRA 70,000 Putnam IRA 50,000

Neither DWS nor Putnam participate in ACAT. Therefore I assume it must be done as manual transfers or direct rollovers. Can you tell me how this will work and what facilities you have to effect these transfers?

On the brokerage account application: “I am exempt from Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) reporting.”

on the IRA application “I certify… and (4) the FATCA code entered on this form (if any) indicating that I am exempt from FATCA reporting is correct.” Note: there is no place in the form to enter a FATCA code.“

My foreign holdings are below the FATCA threshold of $200,000. Therefore, I am not required to report these holdings to FATCA. I assume that is what is meant by “exempt from FATCA reporting”.

Out of curiosity, what would happen if my holdings would increase above the threshold? Would you then need me to close my account? And what if I move back to the US? For US residents the threshold is only $50,000, and if I am over that amount, would you need me to close my accouint?

  U.S. (mailing, legal, alternate or business) address used in any other context with your account

Please note: If the address noted on your account is outside the U.S., but you have instructed Schwab to forward any account-related information to another party (for example, a bank, CPA, relative, tax accountant, etc.) with a U.S. address, you (the account holder) are subject to this IRS rule.
